Nisse Strinning (1917–2006) was a Swedish architect and designer best known for creating the iconic String Shelving System. A pioneer of Scandinavian modernism, Strinning studied architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. In 1949, he and his wife, Kajsa Strinning, designed the String Shelf for a competition by Bonnier, a Swedish publisher seeking a lightweight, affordable bookshelf. Their innovative, modular design—featuring slim metal ladders and wooden shelves—won first prize and became an international success.
The String System epitomizes functional minimalism. It remains a staple in modern interiors and continues to be produced today.
