A highly individual mid-century chair that sits somewhere between furniture and art, combining an expressive steel rod frame with a unique textile work by British artist Maxine Sutton.
The substantial frame has the graphic, sculptural quality associated with Ernest Race, with flowing steel rods, simple wooden armrests and a pleasingly heavy construction. The steel has developed a rich natural patina.
The chair has been reupholstered by Maxine Sutton using her distinctive approach to colour, texture and relief embroidery. The textile has the presence of an artwork in its own right.
The work was presented as part of Sutton's Magic Cloths and Worry Heads project in 2020, an online presentation of works made during the first Covid-19 lockdown. The project marked a shift in Sutton's practice from functional objects towards experimental abstraction and material construction, placing this chair within an interesting moment in the development of her work.
