Eduardo Chillida Munich 1972 Olympic Poster. Framed.

£410.00

An original lithographic 1970 poster by Eduardo Chillida, created for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.

In 1970, Chillida was commissioned alongside a group of prominent international artists, including David Hockney and Josef Albers, to create posters for the Munich Olympics. The artists were invited to represent Germany and its modern Olympic Games as democratic, progressive and forward-facing.

Chillida responded with a bold monochrome abstract form, capturing a sense of power and movement in his distinctive sculptural language.

The typography, directed by Otl Aicher, is in Univers, designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1957. Chillida’s signature is printed as part of the design, with the edition mark ‘Edition Olympia 1972 GmbH 1970’ at the bottom of the print.

There are a few small foxing spots, commensurate with the age of the print and typical of the white wove commercial paper used for the souvenir posters.

We have had the print professionally framed to conservation standards, with acid-free backing and a beautiful slim solid oak frame. The rounded ‘hockey stick’ moulding complements the 1970s character of the poster particularly well.

A striking example of modernist Olympic design, bringing together Chillida’s powerful abstract language with Otl Aicher’s landmark visual identity for Munich 1972.
